Cultural diversity in Dutch classrooms: social interaction and learning, Prof. Dr. Ed Elbers, Utrecht University
Summary: In the four big cities of the Netherlands (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Den Haag and Utrecht) primary schools have a population of, on average, fifty percent or more of pupils from migrant families. In this presentation I will give examples from our research on learning and social interaction in culturally diverse classrooms. In particular, I will concentrate on collaboration between native Dutch and migrant children who work together on school tasks. I will present outcomes both from preschool classrooms and from the higher grades of primary school.

Biography:
Ed Elbers was trained as a developmental psychologist. He is professor of communication, culture and cognition at the department of education at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. His research focuses on communication and learning in classrooms, in particular in culturally diverse classrooms. He is coordinator of the Special Interest Group on ‘Learning and teaching in culturally diverse settings’ of the European Association of Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI).
