Changing the layout and extending the functionality

Appearance

You do not need to know how to write code for a web site to have a nice looking blog. You can choose between a number of themes for your blog. Some have further options to customize the look and feel of your blog. There has just a selection of themes been installed for your blogs here. If you find a WordPress theme in the theme directory that is not yet available on our site, let the technical support of multi-LEARN know and they will get back to you if it can be installed.

Before you change the layout of your blog, you can preview the theme to get an idea of what the end result may look like. Some themes are very simple and do not offer you customization options whereas for other themes you may even be able to upload a custom header image, change the font and adjust colors without knowing how to program. :-)

When you have found a theme that you like and that may go with your blog, click on “Activate” to see the theme in action. The preview is helpful, but it does not always displays everything correctly. If you find that your selected theme does not work out in the end or you want to change it after some time, choose a different one at any time.

Widgets contain information that you can display in the sidebar(s) of your blog. Whether you can place them on the left, right or below your posts depends on your theme. You can drag ‘n’ drop widgets into the sidebar(s), configure them, but also take them out as easily.

Plugins

WordPress is a blogging system that comes with a standard set of features. A large number of programmers extend these features through plugins to allow users to do even more. One plugin that is installed for all BScE blogs is “Profile Pic” which allows everyone to upload a profile picture to their blog which can be displayed on their author page.

Browser through the installed plugins to see which additional features you can enable for your blog. If you want to use one specific plugin, simply click on “Activate”. If you can configure the plugin, look under “Settings” to find it.

As with the WordPress themes, there are lots of them around. If you find a plugin in the plugin directory that you would like to use in your blog, please contact the technical support and briefly describe for what you want to use it. Not all plugins may work properly on our site (we have a multi-user site that differs in some aspects to a single-user site) or maybe there is a similar plugin that does work or has features that could be useful to others. In order to decide whether to install certain plugins or not, your intended purpose helps to make that decision.

Users

People can read your blog without having to register when it is open. They can also comment without registering when you allow comments on your blog. This section is particularly interesting when you want to allow somebody else to be an author on your blog and when you want to add information about yourself.

Tools

If you already have a blog on the web and want to import it here, you can do so here.
